Through certified therapy dogs, youth at Yellowstone Boys and Girls Ranch experience comfort, trust, and emotional support.
For many people, dogs have a special way of brightening a difficult day. Their devotion, calm presence, and unconditional affection can offer comfort when words are not enough.
At Yellowstone Boys and Girls Ranch, the Pet Therapy Program has been part of the Recreational Therapy Department for more than twenty years. The program supports youth in residential treatment by helping reduce stress, improve cooperation, encourage problem solving, and support overall physical and emotional well being.
The flyer highlights Emmy Lou and Cooper, two Golden Retrievers certified as Therapy Dogs through the Delta Society and Pet Partners. Emmy Lou, described as the veteran of the program, has provided countless hours of play, comfort, and love to youth at the Ranch. Cooper, who was certified in 2021, began his own work as a therapy dog shortly afterward.
Pet Therapy offers many benefits for youth who are navigating severe emotional trauma. These moments with dogs can help decrease feelings of isolation and depression, bridge communication gaps, lower anxiety and agitation, and encourage feelings of joy and belonging.
When youth see therapy dogs in the Uihlein Recreation Center, their faces often light up. The simple act of petting a dog can create a relaxation response, helping youth feel more comfortable and open in sharing their thoughts and feelings.
Therapy dogs have also supported youth during medical visits, including moments when a child may feel anxious about blood draws or shots. In those situations, the dogs help provide calm and focus.
